BARANGAY MALIWALO HISTORY

Barangay Maliwalo is one of the barangays enclosed in the East District Division of Barangay in Tarlac City. Barangay Calingcuan bound it on the North, Barangay Culipat on the Northwest, Barangay Matatalaib on the West, Barangay San Juan De Bautista on the Southwest, Barangay San Jose on the East, and Barangay Ungot on the South.

It is approximately 3.0 kilometers away from city proper. It has a total land area of 719.84 hectares were in 259.35 hectares corresponds to agriculture and the remaining 460.49 hectares designate to both residential and industrial area. It is also devided into six zones namely: Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 3A, Zone 3B, Zone 4, Zone 5, znd Zone 6.

Barangay Maliwalo classified as Urban Barangay, it has a total population of eight thousand six hundred ninety (8,690) as of 2005, and a household population of one thousand five hundred twenty nine (1,529).

Barangay Maliwalo was both agricultural and commercial area in terms of agriculture. Approximately 50 % of the populace in this area was farmers. Farming is one of their sources of livelihood. They cultivate palay, corn, vegetables and so on. Other residents were employee, laborers, construction workers, drivers, and so on. Different types of business firms situated here. Some of them are computer shop, general merchandise, enterprise, resort and so on. Some of the residents here were have their own business such as sari-sari stores, canteen, and many more.

Barangay Maliwalo although it is not opulent compare to the other Barangay in material things, it is more popular in terms of cleanliness, and peace and orders. However, what is the origin of this name? Many years passed the place were once islets, that time this barangay was popular in the name “Gasgas”. This let serve as pathway going to the town of Lapaz. One lake filled of different fishes particularly “Liwalu” situated here.

One day, a boy while he is going home, he passed by at this lake. He saw different fishes jumping on the lake. He was amused and decided to catch some for their food. He suddenly dived unto the lake and catches those fish and put it on his pocket when his pocket filled of fishes, he put one fish on his mouth. However, because of the mischievous behavior of that fish, he accidentally swallowed the fish and stuck on his throat. Because of that, he runs faster going to their home and trying to call his mother. However, the only sound came from his mouth is “Ma” and when he is not faraway from his mother he shout “Ma…Liwalo”, and after that the boy suddenly collapsed and died. Because of that phenomenon, the name “Maliwalu” originated. In memory of the boy, the name of this place derived from the fish called “Liwalu” and his shout “Ma”. Past few years, the named “Maliwalu” changed into Maliwalo. At present time, it was more popular in the name “Maliwalo.

Ninety percent of the total populations are Pampango, and the rest are Tagalog, Bisaya, Pangasinense, and Ilocano.

Barangay Maliwalo celebrates their feast day every February 11, as a thanksgiving to the patron Our Lady of Lourdes. Our Lady of Lourdes is the generous Mother of God.
